Photos from Girona

In Girona we visited the Cathedral, el barri vell, the Jewish quarter, the old fortifications, Plaça de Sant Feliu and Independence square.  Here are some photos taken throughout the day.

La lleona

El cul de la lleona (The lioness' bottom)

Whilst in Girona, Mr Coubrough took us to the Plaça de Sant Feliu to kiss a statue of a lioness.  Below is some information about the legend surrounding the lioness taken from the tourist office´s website.

The lioness. There is a popular legend: If you go to Girona you have to kiss the lioness' bottom. It is an easy way to express a wish to come back to the town, or stay there forever or to become a citizen. It goes without saying that someone is not considered a good Girona inhabitant if they haven't completed the ritual. The final argument: this is the only place in the world where you can kiss a lioness' bottom without getting into trouble.

Mr Coubrough was the first person to kiss the lion's bottom.

I.E.S Jaume Vicens Vives

I.E.S Jaume Vicens Vives

On Monday, we visited a Spanish secondary school in Girona called I.E.S Jaume Vicens Vives.  The head of the English departement, Joan Gierola gave us a tour of the school.  During the tour he explained how the Spanish education system works and spoke to us about Catalan festivals.

During the course of the tour, Joan took us into a Year 11 form class. They were preparing their end of year school trip to Pamplona to take part in the San Fermín festival.  Mr Coubrough spoke to them about our trip and about Highburyfields.

Day 1 - Girona

We enjoyed looking at European shops because A) we love shopping and B) it was really cheap! Mr Coubrough took us to kiss a statue of a lion's bum which is supposed to allow us to return to Girona one day.  We also met some nice locals whilst having a snack in the shopping centre this allowed us to practise some Spanish.  After that we all (Lola, Yasmin, Billie and Albina) took turns in going in the massage chair in the shopping centre for only one euro!

Day 2- Port Aventura

Today we visited Port Aventura.  I went on the highest rollercoaster in Europe- Shambala 5 times!

Yeah that's about it.......

Monday 4 June 2012

Today we visited the charming historical Spanish town of Girona.  After a bumpy coach ride with a lot of turbulence we got out and took a group photo beside the town walls. We then walked up to I.E.S Jaume Vicens Vives (a Catalan secondary school) and then walked around the historical sites: the cathedral, the jewish quarter, the walls. We saw the infamous La lleona  some later then kissing it. Local legend says that if you kiss its bum it means that you will return to the town sometime in the future.  After that we walked through the historic quarter and visited the plaça de l’Indepèndcia where we had time to buy some delicious ice creams.
